Oct 17, 2018 Hello, I am new to this forum and site. I have an old Trenton 160#Anvil which I don't know when it was built. Can anybody help me? Trenton, 160# Serial Number A105184. Sep 28, 2015 (the oldest 'dated' anvil of that design that I know is the 'tree anvil' as some people call it because of the 3 tree-like engravings on it above the date, which is 1533) An anvil that they used to have at the Higgins armory before it closed which they had listed as 1500s to early 1600s had feet and a body much like that. 'Anvils in America', (just published and by far the best work on the subject available!), and I think I found the clincher! 'There is one other diference in those anvils with the 'A' prefix. The number on the front of the waist under the horn is always a '4'. Somtimes the '4' is upside down.' This 'upside down `4' sure sounds like your 'T-Z' mark.

Trenton Anvils History
This list is not all inclusive as many new anvil makers are constantly coming into business and small makers are still being discovered. Brands of many modern farrier's anvils are almost impossible to keep up with. Many anvils were made for resellers to be privately branded such as by Sears (Acme brand) and Montgomery Ward (Lakeside brand). Often these anvils had no name or logo marked on them permanently as the resellers had no way to do so. They may have had paper labels, stencils or decals. So if you have a no-name anvil it was probably made by one of the major manufacturers.
